The history of our community...

The
Pinakarri Community in Hamilton Hill was formed in 1991 by a network
of individuals committed to environmental responsibility, social
justice and community values.
Pinakarri
Community is an incorporated not-for-profit association committed to
the principles of co-operation and non-violence.
Our vision
began with a focus to build an urban housing co-operative which
would provide secure rental homes for people on low incomes and
managed by residents as a role model for other people searching for
a more sustainable life-style.
In June
1999 the first residents moved in to the vibrantly coloured, passive
solar designed houses the first community in Australia with
private and Federal equity.
Currently,
(Dec 2006) 22 adults and 15 children live in the community. All residents are
involved in managing the co-op, creating and maintaining the
gardens, verges and common spaces. Community dinners are organised
three times a week in the Common House.
The name
Pinakarri, which comes from the Nygangamarta people in the north
west of Western Australia, means deep listening, and on a monthly
basis Pinakarri residents meet in a "heart circle" to
discuss issues of concern. Residents at Pinakarri have a commitment
to learning to love more completely and to love each other.
Pinakarri
also has a specially designed house for a severely intellectually
and physically disadvantaged resident who has a live in night carer
and a team of day carers. This has given the resident the choice of
increased independence and be an integral part of the community.
Pinakarris
housing provides inspiration for individuals from all walks of life
town planners, architectural students, journalists,
parliamentarians, local government representatives and members of
other communities.
Pinakarri has hosted
numerous events for the local community in Hamilton Hill starting
with an Open Day for the neighbours to introduce the co-operative, a
Carols by Candlelight picnic, a Winter Solstice celebration and it
also initiated the Safer Hamilton Hill Forum. Monthly open house
community dinners offer visitors a taste of community life and a
chance to see the houses and the permaculture garden.
