Matthew ELKIN (1780-1834) was transported to the Colony on the "Perseus", arriving on 4 August 1802. Matthew was tried at Chester Court on 17 April 1797 and sentenced to death for stealing one shilling and twelve pence from a Squire Clarke. His sentence was subsequently remitted to transportation for 7 years. Whilst still a convict in Sydney he was granted permission to marry Mary MOSS a convict who arrived on the "Experiment" in 1804. After being granted his pardon, Matthew worked as a shoemaker at Lower Portland Head until his death on 5 February 1834, the day after giving away two of his daughters in marriage.
