If you are interested in becoming a volunteer you will need at some time to have personal contact with a staff member of Outcare. There are some positions outlined in the web page called "Volunteer positions and application form". Positions are not limited to these and if you have other skills and ideas for volunteering please let us know. You can fill out the form you can get from that page and send it to us or alternatively telephone Outcare on 6263 8622. Either way, staff will discuss what you might want to do and how this could fit in with Outcare's operations.
The next step will be for to you to visit the service area you are interested in and meet the coordinators and staff. You do not have to make any commitment until you are satisfied this is really what you want.
Outcare hopes to attract volunteers who can make a regular commitment and maintain it. This doesn't mean long hours very regularly, for example, you may choose half a day per month. We simply ask for a clear commitment in order to help Outcare plan and maintain its operations with consistency.
Outcare is a non profit crime prevention organisation that supports offenders, ex-offenders, and their families. We need the support of understanding volunteers to provide help to our clients, particularly the women and children in difficult circumstances, who use our Family Support Centres at Canning Vale and Casuarina prisons. These centres are located outside the prisons.
Through volunteering you will be able to support families that are under great stress. Families serve a 'silent sentence' when a family member or a friend is put in prison. In most cases the family loses its major source of income and will have financial pressures. They also suffer rejection in the community from family, friends and school friends.
Volunteers can do a variety of tasks such as childcare, office work, cleaning, driving, statistics and so on. You might have a particular skill you wish to offer and use. We are also looking for volunteers to do other tasks such as fundraising, vehicle driving etc.
Outcare's philosophies on volunteers
Outcare believes that the community, through volunteers, has a strong role to play in its work with offenders, exoffenders, and their families.
Where practical and possible, the organisation will encourage the recruitment of volunteers at all levels.
Volunteers will be valued and utilised fairly and the relationship will be of mutual benefit to both parties.
