Some or all of the following guidelines may be useful depending on your recruitment procedures.

In recruitment literature, (advertisements, application forms, and accompanying information), it should be made clear that if applicants have a criminal conviction, only relevant convictions will be taken into account when assessing suitability.

Details about convictions should be asked for on a separate form, and to retain confidentiality of information given about convictions, it should be returned in a separate envelope addressed to a named person, marked confidential

Appendix 1 contains a suggested form of words which cover these two points.
