Coral Reefs around Big Woody Island (Tooliewah)


Coral reefs can be found growing in the waters around Big Woody Island. The reefs contain several species of hard corals including a type forming bommies up to 1.5 m across, one or more species of staghorn coral and several other morphologies.

They occur at several locations on the east coast and to the north of Datum Point, the northern point of the island. Along the east coast the reefs are concentrated near Middle Bluff upon which the old lighthouse is situated and near North Bluff.

The reefs are generally found on sandy bottoms in shallow water - at low tide 1-2 m.
