Waste Management and Worm Farming

We all try to do our part in reducing and managing our community wastes.

We also compost some of our waste as well. This is one of the simplest ways to reduce the amount garbage (rubbish) being sent to the landfill, plus it makes a great fertilizer. Composting is a natural process through which organic material is converted into a soil-like product called compost or humus (pronounced "hue-mous"). The process works with the help of micro-organisms such as bacteria and fungi combined with air and moisture (Composting Council of Canada, 2000). Our community uses two large bins in which food scraps such as fruits, vegetables, coffee grains etc. can be thrown into it .

Another type of composting that we do is called vermaculture or vermi-composting. Vermi-compositng is the use of worms in soil to help break down organic matter to produce compost. Some community members have them just outside. Here are some photos.
