"Special roofing was used for the homes. Normally used for cool room panelling, this expanding poly-strine was specifically used by architect Richard Hammond because of it's high insulation properties. This 2 inch thick material has an R value of 4.5. Also, to help insulation is a double skinned brick face called Long ridge bricks which are silica based was used. Walls are light colours to reflect heat away from the house during the hot months. The colour is actually added to the mortar mix."

Energy Efficiency

All residents have a high awareness of energy efficiency. Most members have chosen to subscribe to Western Powers new renewable energy scheme, Natural Power. Sharing of equipment has a high priority amongst residents transport, electrical appliances and a washing machine which maximises interaction with each other. Food scraps end up in compost or worm farms, household items such as cans, paper etc are recycled and communal food preparation through communal dinners three times a week saves time and energy. Future planning includes the introduction of solar hot water systems and rain tanks for water conservation.
